Role & Responsibilities

  • Assist in managing the affairs of the organization
  • Assist in reviewing employee work product
  • Communicate with clients and provide status reports
  • Communicate with donors and assist in fundraising
  • Work closely with external attorneys on legal projects
  • Represent clients in litigation and other legal proceedings
  • Advise clients on legal matters
  • Speaking events
  • Media appearances (potential)
  • Report to the Executive Director and Board of Directors

Qualifications

  • JD from an accredited law school with a strong academic record
  • Admitted to practice in New York State, and/or other U.S. states
  • At least 6 years of practice experience, ideally with some litigation experience
  • Experience working in the nonprofit sector (preferred but not required)
  • Areas of interest include: civil and human rights law, anti-discrimination law, First Amendment, and defamation law
  • Demonstrated leadership and legal project management experience 
  • Excellent communication, public speaking, and organizational skills
  • Ability to integrate into a fast-paced and team-oriented environment
  • Demonstrated collaboration skills across different locations
  • Strong legal research, document drafting, and writing skills
  • Comfort with technology, and willingness to learn new platforms and systems
  • All candidates must successfully complete a conflicts of interest clearance review prior to commencement of employment
